- Cracking and movement in the solid wood
Our products are made from pieces of solid wood. Cracking is not common but it should be expected as the wood acclimatises to indoor conditions and breathes naturally, therefore contracting or expanding slightly depending on the time of year. New tables & boards may develop these cracks at the ends and along the pieces as they acclimatise to indoor conditions.
To avoid excessive warping or cracking after you begin using your solid wood table/board a cool environment (18-23 degrees C) with a relative humidity of 38-45% and a little bit of air movement is said to be ideal for wood objects in general. Change thermostat settings gradually as the seasons change. A sudden change in temperature or humidity is the worst thing possible as moisture will be sucked out of or pushed into the material far too quickly causing tension inside it the wood fibres. Excess heat and dryness can even cause cracking and splitting. Avoid extremely hot plates and excessive water allowed to stand for long periods of time. Also avoid vinyl table cloths and glass tops as they can prevent air circulation and may cause warping. It is also important to remember that placing your piece in front of a window in direct sunlight can dry out your piece and cause cracking and splits.
The main causes of damage to wooden furniture are careless handling and environmental conditions. Again, keep in mind that movement, just as small cracks in the surface of your live edge furniture piece is normal and part of the nature of the wood. You may notice lifting or cracking of the epoxy or resin fills; this is from the natural movement of the wood and is normal. Movement/small cracking around the pith (centre) of the tree, knots and natural imperfections in the wood is normal.
Light is a natural enemy of all organic materials; it is especially harmful for wood because the damage is cumulative (meaning it gets worse over time) and therefore irreversible. Sunlight can turn light woods dark and bleach out dark woods. Also, Sunlight will affect the finish of the surface, leaving it discoloured, cracked, or brittle. Leaving your wood piece in direct sunlight, eg. large windows with a lot of sunlight all day long will not be good for your furniture. It may warp and crack. We suggest blinds or a sheet covering if leaving exposed to direct sunlight on an on going basis
- Natural Features in wood
We select our timbers for their natural beauty, so you should expect knots and other natural features of the wood to be visible. These will be left in their natural state unless specifically asked to do otherwise by the table owner at the time of order.
- Overall Table Width
Because the live-edge of a table undulates, the finished table width in a live edge table top may be +/-5% of the specified width at the time of order. Over time, the wood may also shrink slightly (up to 5%) across the grain, or width, of the table.
- Gaps in Boards
Because of seasonal movement in wooden boards, due to their natural breathing throughout the year, gaps may develop between the boards. The table will maintain 100% of its strength and integrity.
- Differences in Colour
Because we use 100% natural wood, differences in the colour of a board and between boards are to be expected, but we always aim to select timbers from the same tree to keep these natural variations to a minimum.
- Colour Matching to Existing Furniture
Because of the individual nature of each board, we are unable to offer exact colour-matching in the finish of the table to an existing piece of furniture. We are happy to use a particular finish that we don’t offer as standard, just ask at the time of ordering for details.
- Staining and Marking
The wood finish we use provides a level of protection against staining and marking, but even with the upmost care tables can mark and stain if you place hot mugs or plates directly on the wood. So we advise using placemats and coasters 100% of the time to avoid this issue. If your table is accidentally marked or damaged, most of the time this can be easily sanded out and then re-finished.
- Table Legs and Bases
Our steel legs and bases are spray finished to a matt black colour, we are happy to use a different colour just ask at the time of ordering for details. Paint can be chipped with impact from another object. Any damage should be repaired (touched-up) to avoid corrosion of the parent steel.
